1914-1918 Henri Derée
Reference :
AR14-11-ML
Full title : 1914-1918 The drawings of Henri Derée
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Captured by the Germans on 19 August 1914, Henri Derée (1888-1974), an architect in civilian life and soldier with the Belgian infantry, spent the next four years at prisoner of war camps in the Hanover area. Throughout these long years he drew what he saw around him : the men and their attitudes, the prison huts, the barbed wire fencing, the changing seasons and light...
For a time, his talent earned him the status of « privileged » prisoner. But in 1916, as more and more men were called to the front, the conditions of internment became harsher and Derée was assigned to a Kommando and forced labour in a salt mine. Due to deteriorating health, he was interned in Switzerland from May 1918 until the Armistice. His beautiful and moving drawings recreate the world of the First World War prison camps which were home, in all, to more than seven million prisoners, including around 2,400,000 in Germany,
