Bling was not invented in the 20th century!
Using clothing, jewellery and accessories to draw attention to oneself when trying to catch the eye of a potential lover or possible ally is probably one of the oldest tricks in the world. It is therefore no surprise that this technique was widely used among nobility and courtiers over the ages as being noticed was paramount within the confines of a monarch's court where fortunes were made or unmade at the hand of important officials or at those of the monarch himself.

Chosen to either supplement or compensate for the lack of birth, station, ability or wit, these accessories were as varied as they were noticeable. 18th and 19th century diamanté cut-steel swords hilts were eminently so, as the way they caught and reflected light was bound to catch the attention. However, their statuts, somewhere between jewels and weapons, means that they are left out of most studies focusing on either weapons or jewellery.

This book's ambition is to remedy this lack of documentation while putting in evidence both the craftsmanship of their creators and the, sometimes superlative, beauty of the end result. It covers the making of such diamanté hilts and the occasions they were worn before describing more than forty examples using precise measurements and numerous photographs.

The result is a beautifully illustrated volume, referencing more than two hundred years of diamnté cut-steel hilt creation and use.
