Built by the Arsenal de Brest from 1959 to 1961, the helicopter carrier Jeanne d'Arc was launched under the provisional name of La Résolue and received the name Jeanne d'Arc on 16 July 1964, the day she was commissioned.
July 1964, the day she was commissioned.
In peacetime, as a training ship for the École d'application des officiers de Marine, the helicopter carrier Jeanne d'Arc was
equipped with an air group comprising 2 Alouette III helicopters of the Aéronautique Navale, reinforced by a detachment of combat helicopters of the Aviation Légère de l'Armée de Terre (ALAT) composed of 2 Puma or Cougar and 3 Gazelle helicopters, with a detachment of 40 men.
In wartime, it was intended to carry out combat missions, either in the field of anti-submarine warfare with 8 WG 13 Lynx helicopters, or as part of an external action mission using ALAT Puma or Gazelle helicopters, and carrying landing troops. On 21 May 2010, the Jeanne d'Arc made her penultimate stopover in Rouen, her sponsor city, before her final return to Brest on 27 May 2010 at the Quai Malbert where she was welcomed by thousands of people.
In the summer of 2010, she will be disarmed at the Brest arsenal. Initially, spare equipment will be disembarked, followed by a certain amount of equipment and materials that can be used on other ships, and an inventory of pollutants will be carried out. The ship's archives and heritage will be preserved and transmitted to the Service Historique de la Marine.
On Wednesday 26 May 2010 at 2am, in a last stand, the mechanics pushed the "old lady's" machines to a speed of 30.9 knots (almost 57 km/h) over the ground. This speed was achieved thanks to the current of the Raz Blanchard, which helped her slightly. The speed then posted on the log was 29.4 knots, thus exceeding the previous record of 27 knots (50 km/h) set shortly after her launch.
