The Leclerc, the main vehicle of the land battlefield, was designed around three fundamental principles: mobility, firepower and protection, to which communication was added. Served by a three-man crew (tank commander, gunner, pilot), capable of withstanding the most severe aggression of high-intensity combat and of dealing with the toughest targets, it can take on all the missions assigned to armoured force units, whatever the environment (nuclear, bacteriological and chemical protection), the type and form of engagement. Its very compact dimensions contribute significantly to its safety. It is protected by a steel structure with very high hardness armouring, by add-on elements mounted as required (upgradeable protection) and by electronic countermeasures. The 1500 HP of its power train ensure a very good off-road mobility (40 to 50 km/h average) and a maximum speed of 70 km/h. Its autonomy is 500 to 650 km thanks to 1300 l tanks and two 400 l drop barrels.
