The White Motor Company began designing and developing the M3 in 1938 to provide the US Army with an armoured reconnaissance vehicle. Powered by a 6-cylinder, 110 hp Hercules JXD petrol engine, it could reach a top speed of 81 km/h. Equipped with four-wheel drive, it was used for patrol, reconnaissance and command post duties. The vehicle could carry up to 8 men and was armed with a Browning M2 12.7 mm machine gun and two other Browning 7.7 mm machine guns on the sides.
It was first used in the Philippines campaign in 1941. Used in North Africa and Sicily, it was replaced during the war by the more modern M8 Greyhound for advanced exploration tasks.
In addition to the US Army, it was used by the British and French armed forces, as well as by certain divisions of the Red Army, which used it on the Eastern Front to fire 76mm ZIS-3 guns.
Also used by Belgium:
It was used from 1941 by the Congolese Public Force (Groupe de Chasseurs Motorisés de la 1° Brigade Coloniale Belge) and then, albeit in small numbers, by various cavalry, infantry and engineering units from 1945 onwards. The Gendarmerie acquired 75 of these for its Mobile Groups.
