Noten, een simpel vierletterig woord uitgesproken op 22 december 1944, stuwde een gewone en tot dan toe totaal onbekende soldaat, brigadegeneraal Anthony Clement McAuliffe, naar de rang van held van de Amerikaanse natie. McAuliffe stond nu aan het hoofd van de zelfbenoemde Bastards of the Bastion of Bastogne. Met hen in de bres, vaak in de voorposten, bracht de interim-leider van de parachutisten van de 101st Airborne Division zijn felle vastberadenheid over op de verdedigers van de Ardense stad. Niets bepaalde dat deze zesenveertigjarige officier een Amerikaanse held zou worden en de legende van de Amerikaanse nationale roman zou worden.
