A key element of modern navies, the task force enables the projection of large forces in regional crises or more serious conflicts.
Built around one or more aircraft carriers, this group is protected by anti-aircraft and anti-submarine warfare escorts, and followed by a wing train in charge of refuelling at sea.
Since the sixties, the French Navy has formed such groups, the new aircraft carriers Clemenceau and Foch being frequently accompanied by Tartar escorts, named after the anti-aircraft system equipping the Kersaint and Dupetit-Thouars among others.
Far from its home port and sometimes in a hostile zone, it is then necessary to supply the group with fuel, ammunition, spare parts and fresh foodstuffs. This is the role of the supply tankers, the first modern ships equipped for this purpose being La Seine and La Saône.
A delicate exercise, refuelling at sea or RAM, saw several ships working together, the tanker often being flanked by the aircraft carrier on one side and a squadron escort on the other. Fuel is transferred by means of flexible hoses, with cargo being transferred by means of pallets suspended by a network of cables.
Finally, an important detail for all the sailors embarked on these warships, the mail of the families arrives on board on the occasion of such refuelling at sea!
