On entering the Soviet Union in June 1941, Hitler was confident that the military campaign in the Russian steppes would be completed by Christmas of that year. The Red Army, which in Berlin was thought to be on the verge of surrender, resumed the offensive in the Moscow sector in December 1941 and forced the Wehrmacht to retreat. At the same time, following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, the United States entered the war and reinforced Great Britain. Caught in the trap of war on two fronts, Hitler decided to finish off the Soviet Union before turning against the Anglo-Saxon allies.
According to the German dictator, a large-scale landing operation was not to be feared in the immediate future. However, to protect his rear while the bulk of his army was concentrated on the Russian front, he decided to build a line of fortifications along the coast of Western Europe.
The construction of this new Chinese wall was entrusted to the Organisation Todt, the agency in charge of executing the Wehrmacht's construction projects, with a workforce rounded up from all over Europe. In the spring of 1944, the Atlantikwall (Atlantic Wall) was still far from being completed: only the major ports had been heavily fortified. By landing between the ports of Cherbourg and Le Havre on the poorly fortified Normandy coast, the Allies had to bypass the defensive system set up by the Reich. The present book is designed as a guide describing the most interesting remains of the German fortification on the Normandy coast (coastal artillery batteries, command posts, radar stations, underground works...).
