A national consciousness is built on common values, but also on symbols and traditions.
The Order of Leopold, Belgium's first and oldest order of merit, is one such symbol. The King is its Grand Master; the collar of the Order surrounds the great arms of the Kingdom and the merits of our elite are rewarded.
History has given little attention to Belgian honours. They appear today like bar codes that we have lost the optical pencil to read!
Eric Tripnaux, a senior army officer, undertook a vast and well-documented investigation into the public and private archives to find out why and how the Order of Leopold was created in 1832. The fruit of his research is presented in a book entitled "The Origin of the Order of Leopold". The historically rich texts are written in French and Dutch and are supplemented by summaries in German and English.
